Discover Luang Prabang in 6 days.  This itinerary will show you around this unique temple city and its beautiful surroundings with a particular focus on cultural heritage of this fascinating town and it's minority Hill Tribes which live within it.

DETAILED ITINERARY:

Day 1 - Luang Prabang City Tour & TAEC Museum

You will be met at the lobby of your chosen hotel by your private guide and transferred by private air conditioned vehicle to Wat Xieng Thong temple which is one of the most beautiful in Laos.  Upon leaving Vat Xieng Thong we will take a walk through the streets of Luang Prabang observing the historical architecture of French colonial buildings and local life before paying a visit to the National Museum, the Former Royal palace which was built 1904-1909 by the French Architect and was gift from the French to our last king of Laos. Next is a visit to Vat Visoun temple commonly known as That Mak Mo (the water melon stupa) built in 1520 AD it is now a Buddhist temple Museum followed by a stop at Vat Aham and Vat Mai. Upon reaching the main street of Luang Prabang we will climb up to the top of Mt. Phousi for a 360 degree view of the city.

The final stop is a visit to the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (TAEC) the museum is a dedication to the preservation on the arts and culture of Laos' diverse ethnic groups. The day ends where you have the choice to either stay in the town or be transferred back to your hotel.

Day 2 - Alms Giving, Pak - Ou Cave | Whiskey Village

Luang Prabang is the perfect place to see one of the most sacred Lao traditions, the Buddhist Alms Giving Ceremony.  Rise early to witness the procession of monks.  You will have the opportunity to take part in this tradition by offering sticky rice to the monks as they collect their one meal of the day.  After returning to your hotel for breakfast you will later be transferred by private vehicle to the boat pier in Luang Prabang where your boat departs. Cruising by Private boat on the Mekong River observe the picturesque limestone formations and local way of life along the river. The first stop is at Ban Xang Hai also known as the 'whiskey village' to see the process of making lao-lao, the country's beloved rice whiskey second only to Beer Lao in popularity. Explore the sanctuaries of Pak Ou and witness the intriguing sight of over 4,000 Buddha images. Enjoy lunch at a floating restaurant (not included) before transferring by private boat for a leisurely cruise on the Mekon back to Luang Prabang

Day 3 - Luang Prabang - Living Land Farm & UXO Visitor Centre

You will be met at the lobby of your chosen hotel where you will be transferred by private vehicle to the Living Land Farm which is a community run enterprise located just outside of Luang Prabang.  The farm maintains educational programs and professional organic farming right next to village rice paddies. Only small groups (join in tour) are able to join the interactive rice farming experience which actively benefits locals from the community, maintaining their crafts in their traditional form. You will see and learn about bamboo weaving, tool and trap making, gardening and even blacksmithing.

 

This unique half-day (join in) activity invites you on an in depth and hands-on learning experience where you will participate in 14 steps of the rice cycle on the Living Lands community farm.

 

Rice is the ultimate foundation of everyday life in Asia and yet it is still a mystery for many visitors. On this exceptional tour, you will be a rice farmer for a day.   Learning how to select the seeds, plant, plough with the help of the farms water buffalo and every other step until the last one... eating! 

 

From Living Land Farm you will transferred by private vehicle back to Luang Prabang where you will stop for lunch (not included)

After lunch transfer to the UXO Visitors centre to obtain information about the 'secret war' of Laos and how Laos became the most heavily bombed country during the Vietnam war 1964 - 1973.  At this visitors centre survival stories are told around the wars, bombs from the war are on display and there is also a moving documentary to watch.

The day ends where you have the choice to either stay in the town or be transferred back to your hotel.​

 

The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Living Land Farm

Day 4 - Luang Prabang - Kuang Si Waterfall & Buffalo Dairy Farm

You will be met at the lobby of your chosen hotel and transfer by private vehicle driving straight to the stunning Kuang Si Waterfall. Take a leisurely hike through the national park towards Kuang- Si Waterfall and pass by the Asian Bear Rescue Centre.  Enjoy feeling the mist of the cool, turquoise waters of the different waterfalls.  Hike to the top of the main waterfall from where you can enjoy the panoramic views.  Return to the pools at the bottom of the falls where you can enjoy a refreshing swim should you wish.

On the return to Luang Prabang we will make a stop at the Laos Buffalo Dairy.

​

The Laos Buffalo Dairy is a social enterprise consisting of a commercial dairy and production facility which makes dairy products for local and overseas customers.  Visit the interactive mini farm and training centre within the dairy to learn about the dairy process and how through this social enterprise it supports local people from villages in and around Luang Prabang by renting their buffalo, which provides the families with a regular income stream from an under utilised resource, namely female buffalo.

 

Transfer back to Luang Prabang by private sir conditioned vehicle.

Buffalo Dairy Farm

Day 5 - Luang Prabang - Elephant Experience Village (join in)

You will be met at the lobby of your chosen hotel.  From here we will transfer to the elephant village by private air conditioned vehicle.  Upon arrival you will receive a short introduction about these majestic animals (join in).  Mount an elephant and enjoy a 1.km jungle trek (join in).  Walk for approximately 4km through a unique natural jungle valley with limestone cascades (private).  Return to the elephant camp for lunch (join in and not included).  Take a boat to Tad Sae Waterfall (join in), where you can swim and relax (private).  Cruise back to the elephant village (join in) and visit Ban Xieng Lom, a Khamu village (private).  Private transfer back to your hotel.

Day 6 - Luang Prabang - Handicraft Weaving & Sea Paper Making, Hmong & Khmu Lao Minority Villages

After breakfast you will be transferred to Ban Xang Khon Village - Handicraft and Sea Paper making villages where you will have the opportunity to see locals making local handicrafts by weaving, carving and paper making.  This is also an opportunity to purchase these locally made products as souvenirs.

From here your private mini van will collect you to drive for approximately 1 hour to visit Hmong and Khmu hill trive villages.  Here you can experience their unique way of life and live like a local before driving back to Luang Prabang late afternoon.

Handicraft Village, Luang Prabang

NOTE:

  • UXO Visitors Centre is closed Saturday and Sunday

  • Elephant Village will be a join in tour therefore you will accompanied by other tourists

  • ​It is recommended to wear proper walking attire and carry mosquito spray.

  • Between February-July Tad Sae falls may have limited water.

  • Kuang Si Waterfalls can get crowded during weekends therefore it is advised to visit during weekdays where possible. Swimming is possible, although the water temperature between November - January is very cool.

  • This tour program has been carefully designed and represents experiences we recommend.  However, should you wish to amend any element of the program to suit your own interests please let us know so we can create a unique trip just for you.
